What to Expect

Taught tying a tie full

All are
Welcome

When you walk through our doors, you’re stepping into a caring community that accepts you for who you are. We see you as an individual person with your own circumstances, needs, strengths, and goals. And you can count on us being here for you.

The
COMMUNITY

At My Friend’s Place, you’re surrounded by people who understand. You’re greeted by our team of caring professionals ready to listen, build trust, and show up for you consistently. It’s a place to rest, recharge, and be free from your moment-to-moment challenges — a community hub where you can determine your own path toward success.

Whether you’re looking for a meal, a shower, help with school or a job, or support finding housing — we’re here, meeting you where you are and walking alongside you on your journey towards stability.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

Get the answers to the most common questions young people ask us.

If you’re between 12-24 and going through homelessness or housing instability, you’re welcome here. Services are open to youth starting at age 12, up until the day you turn 25. You don’t need a referral, ID, or proof of anything — just show up. We’ve got you.

Have pets or kids? We’ve got all of you. Both your pets and kids are also welcome here. We know how important they are. We’ll do our best to help you keep your pet safe and cared for while you’re here. Young parents and families are part of our community too. You can bring your child(ren) with you, and we’ll make sure you both feel safe and supported.

Holding portioned food

We’re a drop-in resource center, not a shelter — so you can come during the day to get meals, showers, supplies, rest, and support, but we don’t have beds for overnight stays.

What we can do is help you connect to shelters and housing programs if you’re looking for a place to stay. We want to be real with you though, we can’t guarantee that there will be bed available on any given night. There are more young people looking for housing than there are available beds. But please know, you don’t have to figure it out alone — we’ll walk through it with you.

You can get things like meals, showers, clothes, hygiene supplies, and a safe space to chill. We also have case managers, health services, creative and life skills workshops, job and school help, and people who can support you with housing stuff. You can choose what you want to do — no pressure, no judgment.

It’s also totally fine if you just want a place to chill and not talk about your situation. You can come here just to hang out, rest, charge your phone, use Wi-Fi, or grab a meal. No one will push you to talk about anything you don’t want to. You control your own time here.

Nope! You can just walk in during our open hours. If you ever want to meet one-on-one with a staff member, we can set that up when you’re here.

We work really hard to make this a safe and respectful place. Everyone here — young people, staff, and volunteers — is treated with care and dignity. We don’t put up with hate, harassment, or violence. You’ll be welcomed by people who actually get what you’re going through.

Feeling nervous? That’s okay. A lot of young people feel that way at first. You can come by just to look around or talk to someone. We’ll walk with you at your pace. You’re not alone — the space, resources, and opportunities are here for you when you’re ready.

Nope. Everything here is free — food, showers, services, everything. You don’t have to pay or owe anyone anything.

Yes! We’ve got folks who can help with resumes, job searches, interview practice, GED prep, enrolling in school, or figuring out what’s next. Whether you’re ready to dive in or just thinking about it, we can support you.

You heard right, but it's a little more complicated. In 2023, we launched a new pilot that we named TAYA (Transition Age Young Adults). TAYA is meant for 25-30 year olds to make sure that they don't fall through the cracks as they transition from TAY to the Adult System of care. Right now, while we are building the program, we can only serve 25+ year olds that were already known to us and working in case management before turning 25.

Yes, absolutely. One of the first things we will offer is support to help you get all the documents you need to be housing, job, and school ready.

You don't have to talk about anything you don't want to and can go at your own pace.

Additional RESOURCES

We work within a community of organizations across LA County that offer housing and other services and resources that we don’t. Some are open during different hours. They are grouped into Service Planning Areas (SPAs).

Opportunities for
Young People

Throughout the year, we will celebrate with you, provide opportunities for work at the drop-in center, and help you get the documentation you need for work, education, and housing.

Black history month
CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS

We are a community that celebrates and plays together. We celebrate Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month in September/October, Black History Month in February, and Pride in June. We have activities, showcases, field trips, and special meals each month.

Weekly Work Skills Program

You can build your skills and your resume at My Friend's Place. Supported by an education & employment case manager, a young person is assigned as an on-site intern responsible for cleaning the drop-in space after it closes. Interns earn income for about an hour of work each day of the week that they work. A new intern is assigned each Monday morning. Talk to the education & employment case managers to get on the wait list.

Assistance with forms
Documentation Program

You will need documents to be ready for housing, employment, and education opportunities. The common ones are California ID, birth records, and social security cards. Our triage case managers can help you through the step-by-step process of getting the documents you need.

The
Place

Our space is a bustling refuge. During drop-in hours, there’s usually a lot going on — computer access and assistance, art workshops, animal companion care, clothes ‘shopping’, meals, celebrations, and much more.

There are also quiet spaces to meet one-on-one with staff for things that take focus and privacy — like getting an ID or other documents, applying for jobs, finding housing, talking privately with a staff member, or connecting to other services.

You decide what you want to work on. We’re here to support you with whatever care, resources, and opportunities we can to help you reach your goals.
