During Latinx-Hispanic Heritage Month, we honored the vibrant cultures, histories, and contributions of Latinx communities— and we celebrated the incredible young people at My Friend’s Place who carry their heritage with pride and resilience.
We kicked things off with a game of lotería, and a cooking demonstration featuring homemade guacamole, which gave the young people an opportunity to make this dish with fresh ingredients alongside their peers. September's birthday celebration was extra special as board member Dr. Sheryl Recinos and her family provided homemade Guatemalan food.

The celebrations continued with a carne asada hosted by Community Cookouts. Carne asada has two meanings: it is both the name for a popular dish of grilled, marinated steak, and a social gathering involving friends and family cooking and eating together. The day also included delicious aguas frescas from Dis Foo Drinks, and a truly unique performance from Cain Carias, also known as Puppet Master 213. The young people at My Friend’s Place enjoyed food and music, and also had the opportunity to learn more about the craft of puppetry from Cain, who uses his puppets to explore and shine light on Latinx culture in Los Angeles.
Latinx-Hispanic Heritage Month concluded with a talent show, and the young people showcased their artwork and skills by performing original poems, songs, and card tricks learned from onsite workshops. Cultural celebrations at My Friend’s Place would not be possible without the generous support from Happy Hippie Foundation!
