Empowering Young People Through Voter Education in the 2024 Election

This election season, My Friend’s Place supported young people in becoming active participants in our democracy. Through our voter education efforts, more than 30 young people registered to vote in California—including 17 first-time voters. Their enthusiasm and commitment to shaping their futures inspires us and underscores the importance of making civic engagement accessible for all.
Building Knowledge and Confidence
Throughout our voter education series, young people joined sessions designed to build confidence and understanding around the voting process. Together, we explored:
- Why voting matters and how individual voices can influence real change.
- Local issues on the ballot, in partnership with LAist, to connect voting directly to their communities.
- A BIPOC panel highlighting the history and significance of the BIPOC vote.
- An overview of political parties, helping participants make informed, values-driven choices.
Expanding Access
This year, My Friend’s Place also served as a flex voting site, making casting a ballot more accessible and approachable for the young people we serve. Removing barriers to participation ensures that their voices can be heard and their votes counted.
We know that young people’s voices are needed now more than ever. As they take their place in our democracy, we are honored to walk alongside them—offering tools, education, and support to ensure they feel empowered to speak up for themselves and their communities.
